68 Steering Wheel Question

68 Steering Wheel Question
My steering wheel is in extremely poor shape. I dyed to the vinyl cover and it looks ok but the actual wheel is cracked up and faded bad. I could put a lace up cover on it like it had and cover it up. My big issue is that its so BIG! I'm not a huge guy (6'1", 220#) but its a pain sliding you legs under it getting in and out, even my wife has the same problem. New foam and seat coverings are only going to make that issue worse.
If I decide to go aftermarket (I dont want to, trying to stay stock but I hate this steering wheel) what size should I be looking at to give me some more clearance but not look like a steering wheel out of a T bucket or something? I'm considering a wood grain wheel.
Thanks

I like the size of the stock 1971 wheel, it's 15". I didn't like the small hard plastic grip though. I just put on the new slip-on padded leather covers and it works great and looks better, feels like a modern wheel now.
I'm not sure what size your 68 wheel is. Alot of the on-line Mustang places have 15" or smaller replacements that even have the Mustang or Shelby logo on them, retro style and have a more modern size grip. Just 1" smaller diameter makes a big diff.

I was in the same boat. I'm 6'2" and had to compress the seat cushion by pushing back to get my leg under the wheel. I put the 13.5 grant wheel in mine and was unhappy with it. The horn button kept popping off and the biggest problem was that the wheel obstructed my view of the gauges. The fix for me was relocating the seats back 2 inches. With that I was able to put the factory wheel back on. As for the crack fix, I've seen it covered in a number of magazines. From what I recall, they grind out the crack areas a little, fill with something, maybe epoxy, then repaint. I think eastwood even makes a kit.

I just went by NPD in Charlotte and picked up the Grant wood wheel. I looked at the 13.5" but it just looked to small. I bought the 15", I was hoping with a different off-set than original it might be less of an issue, we'll see. I hate to hear about the horn button issue, I hope I dont have the same problem.
