Okay, let me see if I understand this right. So the only new wiring I need to add is for the relays, the wiring going to my headlights can still be re-used?

If thats the case I'm just going to buy me some relays and get 4 H4 Halogen lights, 2 lo 2 hi. Maybe I'll do tribar's...

Right, the actual current going to the headlights is coming from whatever 12V source you pick and running through whatever new wire you install. All the old harness is used for is switching the relays.

Okay I was just confused because the kit I found is replacing that whole harness with new plugs and wires. I was thinking that maybe since they're using H4 Halogen's that the whole harness needed thicker wires to get more current to power those bulbs.

Also on the chart in JamesW's link it recommends changing it out to 12 gauge wiring for Halogens, but doesn't say its required. Maybe I read it wrong but who knows...

I'm planning to get some H4 Halogens or something like that so if replacing the harness will make it even brighter than just the relays, I will do it. But if its like you said and is only used for switching it on and won't affect brightness, I'll do the 10 dollar relay mod and just buy my own headlights.

I highly recommend the relay mod. I did it on my '69 and made a big difference in the brightness and reliability even with standard bulbs. I have not gone through the chore of cutting out my bulb dishes to fit the deeper H4 bulbs. Honestly, the standard bulbs work pretty well with the relay mod. Either way you go, get a pint of blood handy because change out bulbs on a '69 SUX! The kit I used is:

It was very nice quality and cleaned up better than I would have done building my own kit.

If you want the headlights to be the absolute brightest they can be all you would have to replace is the wires going from the relay output to the driver side headlights, the wires connecting the driver side headlights to the passenger side and the wires from the headlights to ground. Eight wires total, four short lengths to ground (one for each headlight), two long wires from the driver side lights to the passenger side (one high beam, one low), and two short wires from the relay to the driver side lights (one high beam, one low). Probably less than $10 worth of 10 or 12 gauge wire.

Ok I think I understand now, do autoparts stores sell the plug ins that connect the harness's to each other? Those three prong ones. If I can get those plug ins then I will just redo the wiring in 12 gauge, but for now I could just do the relay mod and get new lights and it will still be bright.

Thanks for you help!

You can get new headlight pigtails at any auto parts store. That way you end up with all new wiring running from power source, through relay, and to the lamp.

Well since i have a 69 fastback also and your idea with lights is what i want to do to mine, i give you a little insight. Once you install the aftermarket headlights you can buy an HID kit with the H4 kit and have the brightness of new cars with the old school look.Just check the wiring so the the power wire get put in the right hole, if need be you can remove the tabs from the harness and replace them were need be.Its not hard.Easy for people that have no electrical skill just have to pay attention
