Default 65 Mustang keep heating up.

Hi

I`ve just got my 65 mustang from the united state and I`m having some troubles with engine heating up...

The car arraived with 2 row radiator which I`ve changed into 3 row heavy duty.
Is also came with 4 blade fan which I have changed into 5 blade.
I`ve also added an electric fan ( which lookis like not helping much)
The only thing I didnt do yet is installing shroud..

I`ll be happy to hear any more ideas about how cooling my stang.

btw:this is a v8 engine 289 and the heating gauge shows always between the 1/2 and 3/4 is that the regular position ? or it might be that gauage is bad also ?

Thanks alot !!
Eran.

I'd reccomend that you ensure the timing is set correctly as well as the fuel mixture. Check for vacuum leaks, and also check the thermostat and/or replace it with a 180 degree unit to help keep it cooler. The only other thing I can think of is to check the water pump since you've prettymuch been through everything else.

Installing the shroud is necessary also.

Here is another post about cooling that may help:

Hi

Well I`ve forgot to mention that I`ve already changed the timing chain. water pump is working okay and the thermostat is brand new.

After driving today in the car I`ve noticed something that made think again..the gauges (sometimes) are moving when I hit the gas and when I leave it..I think that means that something with the electricty is wrong! Actully I dont know much about that but I`m gonna check that for sure. The problem is that the gauge says that heat is over to the H sign but when I try to put my hand on the radiator its almost cold..not all the time but some of it. I get the feelling that the gauge is broken.

Anyway, I`ll try to change the unit to 180 dgree also, what came original with the car? Do you guys think I need to put a 7 blade fan?
Is the shroud is really important ?

I forgot to mention that I`m using leaded fuel is that good also?

Thank you!
Eran.

The shroud is essential. It directs the cooled air that is passsed through the radiator into the path of the fan. Otherwise you are just pushing (swirling) the ambient air of the engine compartment that is already hot from the engine.

You can make sure if the gauge is correct or not by opening your radiator cap just a little bit. Use a thick rubber glove. If boiling water comes out, then the gauge is correct. If you can take the cap completely off with no boiling water present, then it is your gauge, or the sending unit to the gauge, OR, your thermostat is either stuck shut, or was put in upside down. Take the thermostat out of the car, and put it in a pot of water. Cover the thermostat, and boil the water in the pan. If the thermostat is working, it will be open. If not, then buy a new 180 degree thermostat. If you do have boiling water, then you most likely have an old two row radiator that is mostly clogged up. Try flushing the system first, but if that doesn't do the trick, then it is time for a new 3 or 4 row radiator......or better still, a two row aluminum radiator. And yes, the shroud is important. Order a 2 inch shroud and install it along with a 6 blade fan.

I am of course assuming he did a proper flush when he changed it, so it seems the shroud, water pump or the thermostat are the most likely culprits.

Thanks for pointing out my CRS disease, Mark. If the rad was cool, but the gauge is sitting on H, then it could only be two or three things. Stuck thermostat, bad gauge, or a bad sending unit. I think I need another beer. Anybody else want one while I'm up?
