I think gwb's comment was directed more at how to live with a flat-tappet cam as an alternative to going roller.

How 'dirty' are they? You should be able to clean them out with carb cleaner or chem-dip.

Carb cleaner or Chem-Dip should work fine. Don't use a wire brush.

if you want to do it right, you need to disassemble the lifters and clean them. here's some pics of my flat tappets that i did, the guts are basically the same - as is the procedure. with a roller cam you do not need to worry about keeping each lifter in order and the guts will interchange without a problem.

just pop the little retaining clip out and the guts should all come out of the lifter. then clean in gas/carb cleaner/whatever your using. when you reassemble you just squeeze the guts down in a vice and pop the clip back in. when your all done you should be able to take a pushrod, push down on the lifters and they should be springy/squishy.
