located a 9in diff
I have located a 9in rear. It is out of a truck I think. The axles are missing but the chunk and housing are in good shape. I am sure it will need to be shortened but are there any other modifications that will need to be done? Its only $100.00. That leaves alot of room to work to get it right i would think.
i just shortened a rear out of a 68 f-100. You WILL have to move the spring perches from the top of the tubes to the bottom side and place them at the correct distance. I bought what were supposed to be the correct length axles for my 69 but they must be from a 71-73 because they were to long. I shortened my housing 1" to fit the mustang axles i had bought. It really doesn't matter if the axles are missing because they have the wrong bolt pattern. It will be a big bearing housing which means if you use your stock axles you will have to buy conversion bearings. If you have axles made for it then it won't matter, just order them with the correct bearing size. If it is an open rearend you will most likely want to upgrade to at least a traction lock unit. If you do that you can go with any spline count you want.
I am rebuilding every part of mine and it came with a traction lock unit so i only had to rebuild it. I also paid $100 for the rear end and right now i have $550 in it not including the disc brakes i am adding and the $140 i paid for the axles. I shortened it my self and even made my own jig. I also did the powder coating myself so this was basically as cheap as it could be done for.
