Default Cap and Rotor Question

I have an unknown distributor with a Mallory Unilite ignition module inside. I'm looking to replace my cap/rotor and was wondering if I can just get a generic cap and rotor, or do I need to figure out what kind of distributor I have?

Can the Unilite module ever go bad?

Trying to diagnose my weak spark issues...

Thanks!

I had issues with two concurrent Mallory Unilite dizzys. I would accationally just loose spark and would have to jiggle wires and pull the connections to the MSD ignition and reconnect. I never did really find out what was wrong, but after I got stranded for an hour, I bough a MSD dizzy. I have had zero issues with my MSD dizzy, so take that for what it is worth.

That said, a consistently weak spark by itself is probably not going to be a result of the module going bad. All the module does is tell the coil when to fire, so when a unit goes bad it usually results in either improper/erratic ignition timing or no spark at all.

Bring your cap/rotor into your favorite auto parts store and see if it's the same as a standard Ford setup. I bet it is.

Are you also running a MSD 6 ignition and MSD coil ?

I was thinking about just scraping all the Mallory equipment anyway...

I'm running an MSD Pro-Billet ready-to-run distributor in my 331 and I'm happy with it. No box yet, but it's a plug-in addition later on when I can afford it. I've got my eyes set on a Digital6 box.
