Default Inline 6 Advice/ Ideas Needed

Alright all you inline 6 er's, I have a stock 65 200 CI with the original motor and Dagenham 4 speed tranny. Mileage says 29K but I don't have a lot of history on the car to know the actual mileage. It runs great but does smoke some after it idles for a while. Any ideas on on whether it made need a complete rebuild or what us old guys call a valve job. Also, those of you that have hopped these motors up, what is the least expensive way to try and get some more horse power out of this baby? Headers, different head, other suggestions. I'm not ready to swap the motor for a V8 yet since it would mean upgrading the rear end, etc. Thanks for the ideas.

2bbl carburetor, DSII or DUI distributor swap, 250 I6 head.

I have the 2bbl carb and DSII distributor. I also have a 200 that has been bored .040 Gets up and goes after the mods.

Check out fordsix.com for extra help.

What BA said, plus I would do true dual exhaust with headers. (They make headers for the 200, pretty cool.)

Call the guys at Clifford Performance. Plan on being on the phone awhile, they will talk your ear off. They live and breath 6 bangers. I got my headers from them and put a dual exhuast off them. It looks good and sounds good too. They offer a lot of upgrades like cams, intakes, etc.

They have a 6 cylinder upgrade book also.

CJ's Pony Parts now offers headers also.

Clifford wants alot for their parts.

505 dollars for a cam... CI has cam packages starting at 235.
369 for adjustable rockers... CI - 325
160 for valves... CI- starts at 125

I could go on with the list. I wouldn't buy the carb kit they have either. I spent around $100 for mine.

Really appreciate the feedback. Probably will get started next month. I'm familiar with Clifford & CI. What about the aluminum heads offered by CI. Are they worth the almost 2grand or should I look for a 250 head instead? Defininetly will do the headers and dual exhaust. The Falcon Manual suggests 1.6:1 ratio rocker arms if I'm not opting for a performance cam. Thoughts on this? How much more performance can I expect from a 2 barrel carb? The car has a fairly new 1 barrel holly on it now. Thanks again for the insights.

Once you get the 2bbl tuned correctly you will notice a difference. I would just keep the 1bbl on it for right now and then when it breaks upgrade. That was the only reason I even went 2bbl, my fomoco 1bbl broke.
