If the shifter won't move even if you are trying that could mean one of the linkages on the tranny is stuck. We had this happen when we replaced my clutch and one of the linkages wasn't supposed to be where it was and locked up the shifter.

It actually is stuck in a gear but the shifter is loosey goosey and just flops around so it will move but you can tell the shifter wont engage

Sounds like the shift linkage is way out of adjustment. You need to get under the car, loosen up all the linkage, move the levers on the tranny until you get it into neutral, and then adjust the linkage at the shifter.
