you can but the steering columns are different(collapsible) so you need the box and the safety column

Depends on when your car was built. They switched to collapsible columns mid-way through the '67 model year. For example, my fastback, built in January '67, has an early long-input column.

Why do you need a steering box?

I need the info too. My gearbox has about and inch and a half of loose play!!!! It's scary. The whole front end is new and tight.

Are you sure it's the box? Have you tried adjusting it yet?

Have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you look at the steering input and pitman arm to verify that the slop is in the box. If it is, you may try adjusting the box before replacing it.

we dont know for sure, im not going to be swapping them tomorrow. but if we find that it is the box then we wanted to know if we could swap.

we have yet to check out exactly where its coming from.

we are waiting for my grandfather to come down and take a look at it more closely. me and my dad are pretty good, but my grandfather was a mechanic his whole life. and rebuilt more mustangs and fords than anything else.
