Thanks for the comments. It feels good to have her back, well almost. I drove it around the block today, everything feels pretty good. Brakes are still VERY spongy, and need to be bled again. Figured out the alternator isn't working, so that is something new I'll have to tackle. Made an appointment for an alignment on Thursday, so times ticking!!!

Man, and I thought I took on a project, did you paint the car at the same time you were doing all of that?

It was actually painted back in high school and we did all the interior then. It was still an I6 at that time. Then from around 2000 it sat in the garage under a cover. A few times a year I would roll it outside and wash it etc and put it back inside. We worked on it a lot over the last year. Almost everything mechanical is upgraded, rebuilt, or replaced with new. Did you see this thread?

Well, a little over two years later and I'm back at it again. I've been driving the car here and there and every time I drive it 3 things have been bugging the heck out of me, so I decided it was finally time to take care of it. The engine is leaking oil like crazy at the timing cover, the exhaust (if you can call it that) has seen better times and is leaking, and the 2nd and 3rd gear synchros are pretty much shot. So here goes:

Car up on jackstands:

Transmission drained and driveshaft removed:

Speedo, parking brake, and shift linkage all unhooked, exhaust pulled out:

Transmission out:

So here is the exhaust kit I'm thinking about getting, anyone have any thoughts/experience with it?

http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/ite...sp?T1=EK10A+01

I really just want a decent sounding exhaust, nothing too serious, I'm planning on sticking with the original 2V 289 setup so I don't really need a full 3" kit or anything like that.

The other big decision I have to make is what to do about the transmission. As mentioned above it needs to be rebuilt, but it is a T10, which for my goals of the car (weekend cruiser) is probably suitable, but I'm just having heartburn dropping $700 to have someone rebuild it and still just having a T10 (especially with the awful 1st gear ratio). Anyone have any experience rebuilding one themselves? My other option I'm considering is finding a Toploader and using the Toploader Heaven kit to freshen it up. From what I hear a decent shade tree mechanic can accomplish this. However I'm not sure what all I would need from a shifter linkage standpoint. The other option I'm considering is the T5 swap for all the common reasons but realize that is not the cheapest either. Any help in deciding would be appreciated.

rebuilding the standard 4speed doesn't seem that difficult. I've rebuilt a few modern 5 speeds and it's at least a LOT easier than rebuilding a motor. If you can get your hands on a ford service manual for your car it has a pretty decent walkthrough for tearing it down and inspecting things. Youtube probably has a few good walkthroughs as well.

As far as an exhaust goes I'd stick with a 3" with flowmasters. That's what I have on mine and I LOVE the sound. If you want a beastly roar, that's the way to go.

It is indeed from HF. Overall I was pretty happy with it. Plus I got it for $62 after tax because it was on sale and they let me use a 20% off coupon. It didn't seem to move on me too much but I was able to put the strap at a slight angle and it seemed to work ok. Much better than trying to use a floor jack by yourself at least. So I guess it's all relative.

I've done that too many times and the T5 weighs a good bit more than the old 3 speed that was in it.

I'm glad to see your back at it. I would go with a T5, but there is nothing wrong with keeping rebuilding the 4 speed. I think if your pateint and pay close attention to what your doing, rebuilding the 4 speed yourself will work out fine.

If your staying with the stock engine, I'd go with 2.25 inch or 2.5 max and some Dymomax Ultraflow or Super Turbo mufflers, or maybe Magnaflow.

There is no point to running 3 inch exhaust on even a mildly built motor. Also, I've had Flowmaster on more than a few vehicles over the years, and I'll never do it again. The hollow tin can sound and droning is terrible. I had them on my 65 for 6 months and that was enough for me. It has Ultraflows now and everyone thinks it sounds better.

Another vote for a T-5..They work great and are pretty easy to install..
