Default Amp Meter

Can anyone tell me what powers a 64 amp meter? I see a metal loop on the back of it, but cannot find any wires that go to it. Am I missing something or does it detect current flow from the dash panel?

The early ammeters were an "induction' style unit rather that a connected unit. The main black/yellow power wire from the solenoid to the fuse panel runs through that metal loop, which 'senses' the current flow. It was replaced with a conncted type that runs in parallel with the main current circuit.

The wire from the alternator to the voltage regulator passes through the loop, and the induced field causes indication. This was used in 65 only.

yep. just run that cable through that loop and as said before 64 models have falcon dash (no amp meter there).

ampere should be measured inline. You sure the later ones are running parallel?

Yep. Kinda weird. The 66-73 connectors have to be perfectly clean (and I like to grease them with silicone) in order to get any indication at all. The only real ammeters were in 67-70 Shelbys.

They are really in parallel with the base system. The ammeter is just indicating if the current draw is towards the battery or towards the alternator. + means towards the battery.

Generally worthless gage. Swapping to a Voltmeter is best

Default Thank You

I thank those that responded. I thought that it was some induction idea. I think I will get a real voltmeter.
Again,
Thank you.

Does anyone make a volt meter that will look good with the other factory gauges in a '66?

And JamesW, you're stuttering ......
