It's not exactly what I'd call easy, and dial gauges tend to be expensive unless you know you'll use them more than once. I'd just live with it until you're ready to upgrade.

just in case you have a dialgauge and mount. you can use that together with your balancer to see when the intake and exhaust valves open/close. That shouldn't be too hard to do. You can check as well on the pushrod on how far it actually lifts (intake/exhaust). Maybe that will give you good info on what cam it is.
I never tried but those two values shouldn't be too hard to establish. The lift itself .you have to measure on pushrod as most cams have lift just under or over 0.5", so you can't measure at the valve as this would be 0.8" lift and most dial gauges don't measure more than half inch max
If you have the tools give it a try, but I wouldn't buy them for the sake of playing around
