Best Shifter For 68 Mustang
The OE shifter on console equipped 67-68 was a bit different, with two brackets for the PRND21 plate, and an eye on the front for the sliding indicator lamp. You should already have all this, all you need to eliminate the slop in the shifter is about $3 worth of nylon bushings, available from any Mustang supplier or Ford dealer. Honest.

If the trans lock is pushbutton operated, it should be a simple matter to clamp it to the OE shifter lever so you middle finger rests on it. If the stock chrome T handle seems small to you, the deluxe T handle is bigger and better looking, and can be ordered to match the interior color.

You'll be sorry if you sell it. Just box up the console, brackets, wiring, and unique shifter and stash them. In a year or two you or the next owner will want them back, and it'll cost a lot more than you could get for them now. Everyone I've known personally who went with an aftermarket shifter ended up hating it, eventually.
well i got the console for little to nothing, so i am going to sell it it didnt even come in the car. and i can always get another one not that hard to find to me they keep popping up where i live

I was also thinkin about using an aftermarket shifter on my 68 stang, mine doesnt have a console, (thank god i think they look ugly but dont think i could bring myself to trash one either haha) but after reading this im strongly considering just keepin my stock shifter and using it once i get the new motor and tranny back in, the only reason im still considering using a aftermarket shifter is because i want to run a manual valve body eventually, I like being able to shift when i want to, but not sure how it would work with the stock shifter or i guess i could just use the stock shifter and just push it through the gears, like from 1-2-D i guess right? thoughts?
EDIT: after thinking about it, it seems like maybe a shift kit in the c4 to firm up the shifts and then just rebuild the stock shifter may be the route best for me at this time...
