Default power steering? 1969 mustang

hello, its been a while since i was on here last. i have a 1969 mustang with power steering and im trying to remove all the steering components but im having trouble with the power steering ram and where it connects to the frame. when i turn the nut that is holding it the entire shaft the feeds into the ram turns. is there a specific way to remove this?

I think I put tape on the shaft and held it with locking pliers...that was many years ago though.

I've removed mine maybe 6 or 7 times because of continuous problems. Do you mean the big bolt that mounts to the centerlink? You can try an impact wrench, but the way I did it I believe is like what 69mach1377 said, take some vice grips to the back side to hold it in place, or if you unbolt the part on the frame and turn the wheel so it falls down, you might be able to move the ram around as to "jam" the joint up so it won't spin.

Once you break the bolt loose it should be okay, now the nut is tapered though so if it hasn't been removed in a long long time it will be difficult to free from the hole. The way I had to do it is have my dad heat up the centerlink around the bolt to expand it and take a big 'ol hammer to the stud. This was after him and myself tried numerous other methods, but this got it off.

Once you get it off the first time it shouldn't be hard to take it off again, provided that you put it back on.

EDIT: damn I totally missed where you said "where it connects to the frame" well its the same concept, grip onto it with some vice grips. Or if you turn the wrench real fast you might be able to get it loose before the rod starts to turn. I would grab onto it as close to the frame as possible and definitely on the side with the threads (there should be a spot on the end without threads?) if you plan on using it again, you don't want to rough up the part where it goes into the cylinder
