Default Weird early 289 heads?

Saw a Craigslist ad for a free motor out of a Mustang, the product of a divorce and left by estranged husband or something like that. The person just wanted the garage space back. She had no idea what it was, but I figured it was worth a drive to see what it. I am looking for 351 or 390 for my 1969, so I was hopeful.

In the end it was not anything I can use, but I took it to help the lady clean up her garage. I figured I could find it a home, maybe trade it for something I can use, and my garage won't mind the additional mess for now.

The motor is a 289, casting #C5AE-6015E, which I take to be a 1965 motor.

The heads are weird, though. They are stamped only C2OE, date stamp 2C27.
It would seem that these are 221(?) heads from 1962, with a manufacture date of March 27, 1962.

Were they using these on 289's? He had the entire motor in pieces, with new bearings still in the packages for a rebuild. I am at a loss about the heads, can anyone help me out in identifying them?

Thanks.

My guess would be that they are the exact same head as the 289's even tho the 289 didnt come out til '63. Do they physically look different then regular 289 heads? If so you should post some pics and I'm sure someone on here can identify them.

Did you take the rest of the motor as well?

That would be uncommon, wasn't the 221 only produced for one year? Being a windsor motor they should be interchangeable I would imagine unless there is some special consideration with the 221.

I have the block, heads, crank, cam, pistons, and rods. It was missing the intake and exhaust.

I'll measure the valves and try to take some pictures this afternoon.

They are BASICALLY the same castings but keep in mind, the have a smaller valve STEM in them. I think they were the same sized valves but I do remember the stems and guides being smaller. If you do use them, also, keep in mind if you do build the heads with guide plates and stuff, you have to drill out the pushrod hole! If you build it stock, no prob!
