6T09C134654 can you tell by a VIn if a car was a true GT?
the car has some of the options but not all of the-it has fog lights, trumpet exhaust, rally pac-no Gt stripe or badge.
Thanks scott

Yes you can tell. For example, in your VIN number the "C" is the engine code. So your car originally had the "C" code engine (289 with 2 barrel carb). A true GT will have a "K" in this place. GTs are considered "K-codes" All "K" code engines are 289 HiPo with 4 barrel carb. True GTs where only made with the "K" code 289 HiPo engine.
My number is almost identical to yours, except mine is a '65
There are many resources on line that identifies each number in the VIN and what it represents (Transmission type, interior trim, exterior color, etc). This is the best way to determine what options where original to your mustang.

Yes, the 64-, 65, and 66 were not tied to the engine option. The K code engine could be ordered all three years, without the GT package, which was introduced halfway through the 65 model year. The D code 289 4V was too early for the GT. The A code 289 4v Premium Fuel engine replaced it in the 65 model year, but of course it had to be without the GT until later. When the GT came out, you could still get the A code with or without the GT, although the non-GT had single exhaust while the GT had dual exhaust. The K code could also be ordered with or without the GT package, but of course it always had dual exhaust. There were three different dual exhaust systems offered with the K code, the early transverse style, the later twin style, and the optional Arvinode on 64-65.
The 1967 GT could be ordered with the C code, but rarely was. I've never seen one.

the thing about mustangs were they were completely customizable. so without original documentation, its pretty hard to tell what your car truly was.
my car was titled a GT, but missing most of the GT options. like badges, fog lights, correct dual exhaust, stripes, etc. but my car is an A code. 6R07Axxxxx. 6 meaning 66, R meaning built in San jose, 07 means coupe, A means engine. i didnt get any paperwork with my car. but we were able to tell its a GT cause the vin is the original stamping (on both fenders) its got BOTH exhaust hanger spots. behind the seat and up in the rear framerail (only was to get the extra bracing in the framerail is when the car is assembled in the factory). and its got the orignal hole cut out of the radiator support for the fog lights. the fenders had no hole cut out for the standard c code badging. the original holes for the GT badges were noticable from the inside since the car was repainted. and the dash has holes for where the fog light switch hangs, along with the emergency switch.
the physical research will help you tell whether it was a GT vs an A code or other.

I believe the others may have answered your question but this is a nice site to look vin info up on.

Funny that your GT items were stripped off, usually it's the other way, the GT stuff is added to a non-GT. At least you'll be able to get all of it.
