Default '68 Mustang Console

I'm slowly but surely working on the convertible, and this is a project I've been wanting to tackle for a while. My grandad gave the console to me as a gift, it was an original, and even though I'm not particularly fond of it I'd like to put it in the car for him.

The problem is the brace for the convertible gets in the way of the console sitting flush on the floor. I'm told there is a template that shows where to cut the console but have had a hard time finding people that know what I'm talking about! I don't want to go in guns a blazin on this project, as they aren't cheap to replace!

Thanks in advance!

I think I would save the original console and buy a aftermarket type. The originals lack an arm rest and have no drink holders. The arm rest really makes the car more comfortable and it never hurts to have a drink on hand (hot coffee between the legs). If you are trying for the concours look, then forget what I said.

The problem is the aftermarkets that are in this design I've seen go for as much as $1200! Makes me wonder what this things worth, but that's really besides the point. Whether I put it in or not I would really like to have that template just in case!

Take a look at the underside. On the '64.5-'66 consoles there is a cut line that tells you where to cut it for the A/C models, since A/C was underdash. If something needs to be cut for a vert, chances are good that there are markings of where the cut should be.

This is just a shot in the dark, but worth looking into.

Only the repro 64-66 console base has the cut lines.

No repro 68 console is yet available. Well, the plywood Shelby console is. Not the Mustang.

Glazier Nolan can sell you a pattern for cutting the convertible console.
