It means the state legislature thinks a hung-over high school dropout is more qualified to put gas in your car than you are. Apparently, they live in terror that citizens will shove the hose in the tank, pump the gas, then peel out of the station with the torn-off hose dragging behind their cars.

If I sound bitter, it's because one such "qualified attendant" snapped the 71 mach1 cap right off my car because I wasn't allowed to touch it.

As 2+2 said.. only the station attendant can operate the pumps in NJ due to government regulations. This usually means some high school dropout kid, or more often then not, some foreigner who cant speak English. Most have no idea where the cap even is or how to fill it up without spilling fuel all over the place.

I refuse to allow anyone at the gas pumps to fill our stang. Like I said, there was only 1 attendant who refused to let me. No big deal I drove across the street and filled up myself there. Most don't want to scratch or chance damaging the car so are more then willing to let me do it myself.

If its a different station or attendant I'll simply ask them if they know how to correctly and safely fill this type of custom car so fuel doesn't spill. Usually they look at me and tell me to go ahead and do it myself.

This is what works for me. If I stick to this particular gas pump. The ones on either side constantly shut off on me, but this one works fine, in this position

That is just stupid that you can't pump your own gas. I guess I can see what their thinking is, but it doesn't really hold water.

I have that gas cap lock that allows the use of the OEM cap. Its a spring loaded rod that is accessed from inside the trunk. I definitely would want some jackass screwing with it. He would probably never figure it out anyway.

When I fill up, I take the nozzle and push it all the way in as far as it will go, then up so the nozzle angles as far down as possible. That usually works.
