The $300 engine may wind up coasting you a couple of grand new heads and everything to fit the trans to it. Just check it all out before you think its cheep H.P
Well, he doesn't have to change the heads. A stone-stock 429 passenger engine has enough power to shred the tires off a Mustang. These engines were intended to drag around two-and-a-half-ton luxury cars. The Mustang is barely half the weight of these huge cars.
More like $400 to get it into the car. If there is no transmission included, he'll also have to get a 385-compatible C6 at a yard. Any big Ford, Mercury, or Lincoln can provide this trans, even the 351M equipped cars. Some work will be required to attach a shifter to the trans.
That looks exactly like a Windsor. The 429/460s I have seen with normal heads have had flat top valve covers like the Clevelands. Regardless, I honestly have not seen a 429 without hemi style heads in a classic mustang. Surprising that it will fit.

This is the BOSS 429, and it's not surprising that special shock towers were required to clear it. On the other hand, millions of Ford vehicles had the 429/460 "385" series engine, which was pretty conventional.
manual would be can of worms? What about a toploader?
Well, for that you'll need the big-shaft toploader, that'll run you easily over $1000, then you'll need a 429/460 bellhousing, clutch, flywheel, then you'll need clutch linkage, pedals, etc, shifter…
Suffice to say even if you have to get the C6 rebuilt, going 4-speed will cost three or four times as much.
The flat valve covers are oem most aftermarket ones look like a windsor.Yeah it will fit its kinda tight so a tiny bit of shaving the shock towers will help later on when you change the plugs.Yeah a toploader for a big block isnt cheap to do id look more in to a tko or something with a over drive on it.
