Default Timing Pointer Idea Needed

I'm looking for ideas on fabbing up a timing pointer for my 302 (mounted in the 2:00 position on the water pump). I'm missing mine...

Anyhow, I'm not excited about paying high dollars for a billet aluminum - although I like the idea of the adjustability for correcting.

Has anyone been frustrated with the accuracy of the stamped pointers? I see those can be purchased relatively cheap. I figured if I made one myself, I could hit it exactly at TDC.

Any thoughts/ideas/pictures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I recently had to deal with this problem on my engine. I could not see the pointer on the passenger side due to the blower being in the way. I went to the parts store and purchased a Mr. Gasket timing tape. I then used a heavy duty coat hanger as the pointer. I bolted it to an unused bolt hole by the oil sending unit and then adjusted it to line up with TDC. Works like a charm and is sturdy enough that it won't bet knocked around (within reason). It was simple, cheap and an easy fix. Just make sure you use a heavy duty hanger.

That is a great idea...and even simpler than I was thinking. I'm going to give that a shot tonight.

Thank you 68EFIvert.
