Default pertronix wiring need help!

its been awhile since ive posted on here, but i got to ask some questions about my 68 coupe. first off im running a pertronix ignitor with a flamethrower coil its the pertronix I. I wired it to the coil using the original switch wire from the stock harness to the positive side and the red from the ignitor, so i have both on the +side. and the black on the -side. the motor starts and runs fine but when i put it in gear(its a c-4 auto) she wants to stall out unless i use my left foot on the brake and feather the gas pedal. Now i had this problem with my autolite 4100 and just recently switched to Holley 600 thinking that the carb was the problem, so im not thinking its a carb problem. what im asking is do i need to run a full 12 volt from my switch to the ignitor/coil and bypass the original wire. this question seems beat to death but i cant find a definitive answer. i dont wanna start hacking at the switch wires. Now heres a funny result, i tested my power at the coil (wires hooked up switch on) they show 5.7 volts now unhook the wires and it reads 11.89 from the switch. if i run the switch wire to the ignitor it still shows 11.89 if i run the switch wire to the coil it is 11.89 but when i add the ignitor wire at the coil it drops to 5.7.
Just wondering if anyone found that they needed to pybass the stock wire. and if it improved the low idle. thanks

ok im answering my own post... lol
no really in case anyone ever needs this info. what i found after plundering around. I ran a new wire clear back to the switch at the green/red stripe wire and picked up 11.89 volts, when i wired it to the coil and added the red wire from the ignitor i had 11.55 volts at the coil. so im gonna test run her tomorrow. apparently the other wire was a resistor type. if any one has any additional info or experiences i would like to hear from you. thanks

i believe the problem with curtting out to be either wrong ignition timing (borrow a timing gun), or the idle not adjutsed properly. try increasing the idle speed by 500rpm
(curb idle screw on holley)

+1

I also have to keep one foot on the brake and the other on the gas until mine warms up for a few minutes if I haven't started it in a few days or a week, etc.

I wired my Pertronix exactly like the instructions say (red to + side of coil and black to - side) and it ran great with no further monkey business required.

One thing that comes to mind is make sure you have the gap set correctly on the Petronix under the cap.

ok guys thanks for the ideas. sorry it takes me so long to reply to the posts. I do construction work and its the busy time of the year. heres where im at now. After running the 12 volt from the switch the car definitly seems to fire up quicker i mean i only gotta bump the key and she fires up. But im still having the idle in drive problem... ive got her idling now at about 900 rpm with my dwell meter hooked up to it (for rpm readings only). it idles fine maybe just an occaisional lope. but as soon as i drop her in drive even warmed up it all but wants to stall.
Now something i didnt let you all in on previously was this 302 is an explorer bottom with gt40p heads with a motorsports B-cam. I know all this should have been told earlier.
I am running my stock converter on my c-4.
I do have the correct balancing (50 oz on the harmonic special 3 bolt and 50 on the flywheel 157 tooth.
Im beginning to wonder if im needing a higher stall converter??? Was looking tonight at TCI sizzler, and BM holeshot 2400. Any ideas.
Also i gotta add this tranny and converter were sitting since 1983 was a fresh rebuild in 1981. no tranny leaks or anything but im wondering if the converter is ok or locking up on me? thanks all

i think the important question here is how was it running before you installed the pertronix?

it ran about the same always seemed to wanna stall upon selecting a gear. thats why i been chasing my tail with the dizzy and carb. so i think they are kinda both ruled out. i started out running points and 4100 autolite. ive been all over the engine checking for vacuum leaks. i dont think thats a problem im a detail freak when building.
