Default Top Question

Coopster here. I found a 67 that I want but it has a vinyl top. That is OK but I'd prefer it was smooth. My question is: can the vinyl top be removed and look like one that never had a vinyl top? Is it major touble? Thanks.[sm=americanasmiley.gif]

Yes it can be removed, and the top prepped for paint. The problem with a lot of the vinyl top cars, is that many times rust was so bad it became impossible to use the existing steel top. But, if yours is rust free, or at least no major holes in it, you can peel off the vinyl and prep it for paint.

Mine was vinyl, and it was THRASHED! I peeled it off with no effort what so ever. The only places that were hard, were the pillars, and around the windsheild/back window trim(chrome). There will be a rust issue around the trim, but it's not that hard to do.

Like soaring said, it'll depend on your rust status on the roof. Certain areas can be fixed easily, whilst others cannot. You'll have to pull the vinyl off first to figure it out.

If everything is good roof-wise, then prep it for paint as Soaring suggested, you'll also have to weld in the quarter panel molding holes in, unless you plan on keeping the molding there out of personal taste, but they're really there to separate the vinyl from the quarter panels. Good luck.
