Sometimes a battery is to gone for a jump. Do you have a meter to get an accurate reading?

no, I don't have a meter, but I'll try to track one down. could that grind be coming from the engine not being able to turn fast enough?

Thats what I think.

Take your battery out and take it to a local auto parts store. Most of them will test and charge your battery free of charge.
