Hey 2+2 thats a very cool article on the exhaust ports but what about the intake ports were they typically better than the exhaust ports or would they benefit equally as well from matching to the intake?

they are both bad but for the exhaust side I have no description. it's unreal bad. I still have the old 289 heads from 66 in buddies garage. I can take pictures of both sides, you'll know what I mean then

it sounds like a fun project but im not sure I want to pull the heads off.

I also cant remember if my headman shorty headers have an oval port or a square port...hummm I remember something being oval maybe it was my old edelbrock long tube headers that were oval.

How much do you think mismatch ports on the headers hurt hp?

The headers will always be kinda round. Since the use round tubes and just stretch it to shape. Too small header ports, I mean smaller than the exhaust port of the heads are probably the worst that can happen. I'll probably won't make it over before Christmas. But when I do I take pics

The really bad part of the heads by far is the exhaust. If I had to put a number on it, I'd say 90/10. If there is any obvious problem with an intake runner, like a big iron booger, you could smooth that out, but for whatever reason, the exhaust ports were done so badly you'd think the guys at the foundry drove Chevys.

My Hedman long tube headers utilize a square port. I'm guessing your shorty's do to.
