Code cracking.
I have to replace my distributor for my mustang. It is a 66 built the 29th of December 1965. It’s equipped with a 2v 289 and an automatic transmission.
Now to the interesting part of it; it’s an original California car, which means it has the thermactor smog system. Shall I have a distributor with the code C5ZF-12127-AK or is it C5AF-12127-AK? I have never seen a mustang distributor code for thermactor; they have all had an A instead of a Z. Is “A” an general code for ford passenger cars?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Why do you have to replace it? They are dead easy to recondition. If you have the skills to remove and replace it, you can recondition it. Adjusting the advance curves takes skill and equipment, but that is also true of "remanufactured" distributors. I have never seen one yet that was right.
I doing a concourse restoration and need to understand what part No I shall have; the distributor on my car have been replaced.
I found out what I shall have (C6AF-12127-AK) and I have bought one (just received it).
