Default Door Handle Rod Adjustment

Guys,

Has anyone had problems with thier door handle rods being too long?

I have everything installed correctly on my 65 and the drivers door works great. For some reason, it looks like the rod is around a half inch too long and it is not actuating the door latch mechanism when I use the outside handle. The inside handle works great.

My haynes manual says I should shorten the rod. Has anyone done this?

Dunno, I use Haynes for mulch. Check the Factory Service Manual. However, I've never seen a factory installed rod that was the wrong length, certainly not a half inch.

I wouldn't cut it. Did it work before you dis-assembled it? It sounds like something isn't positioned/installed correctly. Maybe recheck everything??

I dont know if it has ever worked. It sure didn't work when I picked the car up out of the barn.

Is there really that much adjustment in the push button actuator?

I'm pretty sure the 65 rod is adjustable by disconnecting it at the handle and then spinning it. The mechanism at the latch is threaded. Spin it in what ever direction allows the top of the rod to fit back into the handle with the handle button all the way out. I'm pretty sure that they are adjustable that way.

I'm pretty sure it is not threaded.

I might actually consider threading one of the ends so that it is adjustable though. That would make a lot of sense.

I'm pretty sure it is threaded. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. When working on these cars we would tread them out when the door handles were removed so they would not fall back into the door and would have to readjust them when reinstalling the door handle.

yup, that's what I didn on my 67. They are threaded at the latch end for adjustment.
