ignition switch relacement
Does anyone have a write u or a how-to to change the switch in the 70, the one on the column, I can't find how to take the the column apart short of breaking it.
past that how is the switch held in?

is there a ring around it with 3 or 4 little markings on it? im not exactly sure on the 70's. if so try and break that outer ring loose and pull out the whole ignition.. i think the whole unit is around 12-15 bux!! well worth it. i replaced mine not too long ago
Just to make sure. Are you talking about the lock cylinder on the column by the steering wheel or the ignition switch on the column under the dash. If it the lock cylinder then do what 001mustang said and you will have it. If it is the ignition switch then let us know and we can tell you how to change that.
its the lock cylinder on the column, only info I found on it said to remove the steering wheel and there was a hole to release it
also the reason I need to change it is because the outer chrome part with the ears on it is broke off and I have no key to it, but it appears to be in the on position, as the wheel doesn't lock.

The switch attaches to the column with two nuts, and to the lock with a pin. Unplug the wiring, remove these, and you are all set.

hmmm this could get interesting. if you are lucky then it is in the run position and all you will have to do is push the little button in the hole. If not you will need to use a flat screwdriver to try and turn it into the run position. If you have tried everything possible to get it to turn then you might have to drill the cylinder out but this should be an absolutly last option. Very possible to damage the column.
Its been a few years sense i changed the cylinder on my 70 but i do think i had to pull the steering wheel to get to the hole. Take a look below the cylinder and if there isnt a hole in the column shroud then the wheel will need to come off to get to the hole.

If you buy a replacement switch, this is what you will get. The retaining pin can be seen on the top left of the cylinder. To remove it all you have to do is to depress the retaining pin and rotate the key cylinder and pull it out. There should be a hole that lines up with this pin. Use an approximately 1/8" rod inserted into the hole to push in the pin. To my knowledge there are no nuts that have to be removed to replace this switch. Without a key, you may have to drill out the tumbler/key assembly and pull out the old cylinder in pieces. As long as you don't mess with the aluminum die cast material (the steering column itself) that holds this assembly in you will be alright because you replace this entire assembly anyway.
