A screaching noise from the rear of the engine sounds like the starter may not be disengaging from the flywheel/flexplate.

I've got an update. I pulled the starter and put a brand new one in. It starts up, but now I hear a chirping noise. Eventually, the noise goes away, bugt when I put it in reverse, the noise comes right back. Also, the interior lights are surging when the car is running.

Man so hard to diagnose not being there...chirpping noise tells me loose fan belt or old warn fan belt. that would answer lights surging as well

Could it be the solenoid not disengaging the starter and causing the lights to flicker?

the fan belt suggestion sounded pretty nice not gonna lie

if the solenoid didnt disengage it should be making a loud grinding weird noise and you hit it to make it unstick
