Default Question when replacing steering box

I am considering replacing my steering box w/ a flaming river set up. How would I know if I need a short or long shaft option?

Also, I read an article on mustangmonthly.com how to replace it. Looks easy but the write up was done when there was no engine under the hood. One step requires pulling the shaft from the sterring column while connected to the box. Does it need to be connected to the box? I have long tube headers and would hate to have to pull off the headers. How did you do this maneuver during this step w/ the engine?

Attached is the step during the write up that you see him remove both units together.

I think I was lucky, it was a coincidence I was doing new exhaust when I replaced my box. Pretty sure I would not have been able to do it without removing the header. I think I also removed my driver seat.

Your photo shows a long shaft.

1) remove steering column
2) remove driver seat
3) remove LH valve cover
4) remove #7&8 spark plugs
5) remove LH cowl brace
6) remove pittman arm
7) remove steering gearbox

Depending on which type of header you have, you'll probably have to remove the LH header. One more reason I don't use them much anymore.

I got mine out and in without removing the valve cover or the plugs, (but, was very careful). I also had to remove the booster, master cylinder, and the exhaust manifold in addition to the seat, steering column, etc.
