converting c4 to toploader
This is the back end of a 289 with automatic flywheel installed. The pocket in the center is machined for the manual trans pilot bushing. The deeper hole in the center provides extra clearance for the pilot tip of the trans input shaft.
no need to argue guys. both of you have given me much help with many of my posts. this is my first mustang and my first build so i value everyone's opinions greatly. everyone on this forum has given me A LOT of knowledge and help with my car and i GREATLY appreciate it. so lets keep the arguing to a minimum. after all, this is supposed to be fun, right?
as for the conversion, its a 289 c4, but im going to end up running a 408 stroker. i know its cheapest to keep the c4, but i truly want a standard. and like i said, 4400 is a lot to pay for a tko conversion dont you all think? ill go for the 4speed for now since its not my daily driver. with that being said, is it easy to swap the 4 speed into my 289 and then once the 408 is done just swap it onto that? or do i need to modify anything? i though a 4 speed was a factory option with this car.
FTW, ill post some pics of the car tomorrow for you.

Easy? relatively, but you have to install the clutch pedal assembly, Z-bar and springs, replace the drive plate for the C4 with a flywheel and clutch assembly and get a bell housing. I strongly suggest an 11 inch clutch which will require a 164 tooth flywheel and a new block plate - along with the larger bell housing. The 289 doesn't need an 11" clutch but your new windsor engine will. If you get the Top loader for your year of car the cross member and transmission mount will be fine. You will also need to get a shifter for the transmission and an adapter to mount the shifter to the transmission. All the parts for the 289 should fit the 351W block so you won't have to "upgrade" with your new engine - other than the exhaust components.

Thanks for that info Paul...where should i look to pick up these parts? do they sell kits? its going to be a 408w that should be putting out a solid 500hp/ ft lbs (i hope lol). im unsure on where to look for these parts. i also dont even have the 351w block because im trying to decide if i should pick up a stock block out of a truck or something or go with a dart block. im not sure if a stock block can handle 500-550 hp.
A stock 351W block will handle a lot more than 500hp! Unless they have been poorly machined they are capable of 800hp or about 1.8 - 2 hp per cubic inch.
As far as where to get the conversion parts most use either the wrecking yards or find a cheap donor car.
