Default 5/6 speed 1970 fastback conversion

hey guys, i was wondering if anyone has had any real experience putting in a 5 or even a 6 speed manual transmission in a 69/70 fastback before. Cause the 3 speed i have isnt working out so great on the highway and i would like 2 or 3 extra gears after those, so some info on how hard it is and how much it will cost me would be really helpful, thanks

It depends how much power you have and your budget.Under 300 foot pounds torque a t5 from a fox body will do with the swap parts.Over 350 foot pounds of torque would be a beefed up t5 or a tko.Look around http://www.moderndriveline.com/ and http://www.keislerauto.com/ both make full swap kits are are nice friendly people.

Switching to a T5 5-speed is well supported with only a few adapters needed, you don't even have to disturb your clutch, you can switch from 3-speed to 5-speed in 2-3 hours.

6-speed is a major project.

You don't have to use a clutch cable. You can keep your existing clutch linkage if you like.

A T5 would be a great swap. Not sure what's needed in a '70 swap though. Sorry I can't help.

Starfury is right. Changing to a cable clutch would be insanity considering you already have a perfectly good clutch in the car now. I have done this conversion in 2 hours. You didn't think that included some whacky clutch conversion, did you?

Leave the pedal, linkage, Z bar, bellhousing, clutch alone.

Remove driveshaft, shifter, speedo cable, trans crossmember, and 3-speed trans.
Install 5-speed adapter plate.
Install 5-speed trans.
Install shift lever on trans.
Install T5 adapter crossmember.
Connect speedo cable to trans.
Install driveshaft.

Drive car.

but the thing is that i don't have a clutch i have a 3 speed automatic... which isn't even code correct either. So i would have to put a WHOLE other pedal in, and a WHOLE new cable in, swapping from auto to manual. :/

Oh. Kinda thew me there, calling a C4 automatic a "3-speed". The 3-speed manual was the standard equipment trans on all Mustangs. All Mustang autos had 3 speeds.

Still not sunk. I have swapped over auto trans Mustangs to 5-speed. Adding a clutch pedal adds a couple hours. I would recommend using the stock clutch setup, not a cable. The pedal bracket was the same either way. You do have to hole saw the hole for the upper clutch rod in the firewall. The threaded holes for the equalizer are already there in your car. Everything under car is bolt-on for changing to manual. It should take a full Saturday, or an easy weekend for the whole job.
