Question Electric Fan

I have a warmed over late model 302 with a mild cam and aluminum heads in my 65. I currently have a flex fan, but its barely adequate and not really adequate for the AC.

I have an aluminum Fluidyne radiator that is 3.5 inches thick and only have a little less than 3.5 inches between the radiator and the water pump.

I'm probably going to switch to electric fan. I'm looking at these slim 16 inch fans from Flex a lite and Be Cool. How many CFM does the fan need to move in order to get the job done.

Personally I prefer a thermal clutch fan, much easier to install than an electric.

There's always this bad boy, a complete kit specially made as a direct bolt-on for the 64-66 Mustang.

" How many CFM does the fan need to move in order to get the job done."

That depends, are you at sea level. are you in a desert, is it winter, are you stuck in traffic, or at 65 on the open road.

Hey, Rat, thanks for the excellent link!

As for the CFM, on the open road you really don't need a fan at all.

I'm surprised you don't have an avatar, the choices are so obvious.

I've got a similar setup on my 65 - 3 row rad, mild cam, all iron, but I can't remember the specs on my fan at the moment. I think it's a Hayden. It's the same size as the radiator, has 1/2" clearance to the water pump, and there's NO room for error on the cooling side. Slow traffic and it starts to creep off the 195 towards the 210 area on the gauge with or without a/c. It's never overheated, but it's proven to be edgy. Keep this in mind and don't think you can get away with marginal here. If you find something that "just" fits the specs, step up to the next size.

I thought you hated all this crap? Didn't you tell like 50 people they were idiots for considering an electric fan? hehe.

I run the flexalite black magic but I dont have AC. But I can say the black magic is reliable and keeps my non AC 302 cool in central Ca 110 degree traffic. I also run the norther AL direct fit radiator. This fan is as reliable as your connections so crimp and solder all your termination ends and it should last many years. I got about 10 out of mine daily driven and finally the thermostat control unit failed it was replaced for about 15 bucks and took about 30 minutes. If it had failed on the street it could have been bypassed to get home as well.

Good luck

True, it's a knock-off, but I was going for the Mustang connection.

That first picture is Mothers Worry

Ed Roth was my hero when I was in High school. I wrote him a letter once and asked how much a T-shirt was with Mothers worry , He sent me a T-shirt and a letter, Basicly, NO Charge.
