Ignition Help
I am not sure if it is the ignition or exactly what it is? I have a 65 fastback with a 289 engine and the MSD ignition.
When I go to start the pony it will sometimes continue to kick over even if the car is running. I can turn the key off and pull it from the ignition but it continues to kick over. I am then forced to pull the battery cable while it is kicking over or wait until the battery dies. I was told to try the starter solenoid but have repalced that with a brand new one today. I was kicking it over as it has been sitting far too long and after about 15 attempts to start the car it got stuck in continous kick over mode until I pulled the batter cable.
Is it my MSD ignition box or has soemthing been wired wrong?
I appreciate any help in solving this issue.
Thank you,
John

yep, replaced already, but try with a whack as 2+2 says, you'd never know.
check on the wiring. a lot of people find a loose cable, attach it somewhere, everything seems to work. happy days and then forgot what they did when problems occur.
on the starter selonoid you shoud have connected the following:
when looking at it from engine side direction
- the left big port goes to battery. you might have other things connected there as well. it's ok
- the right big port goes to starter. NOTHING else connected there
- the left small port on the starter selonoid (called 'S' port). there should be only one cable that goes to ignition switch (or to neutral safety switch if you have an automatic). NOTHING else connected there!
- the right small terminal: you don't need that anymore (better said can't use that anymore) with your MSD box. disconnect whatever is hooked up there.
if the problem remains: don't disconnect the battery cable, just remove the wire from the 'S' port of selonoid. let us know if this stops the engine turning

New solenoid? Too many times "new" parts are worse than the parts replaced. Yeah, be sure and try the "tap" technique before replacing any more parts. When you pulled the key and it was still "kicking over", did the engine die while the starter was still engaged or did you have a running engine AND starter with the key off/out?
Yes, when I pull the key and placed it in my pocket the car contines to run. I am going to try the wiring as noted above by Kalli and see if it happens again. I will also use the hammer I mean tapping method on the solenid if it happens again.
Thanks to all for the help and I hope to do this and have it running when I get out of work!

I had this problem on a different vehicle and it ended up being the bendix drive staying in mesh with the flywheel because the flywheel teeth were so worn and chewed up. Once the engine started, it basically fried the starter. Easy check would be to pull the starter and manually turn the engine over to inspect the teeth on the flywheel.
Fixed and running!! Rewired the solenoid like Kalli said and so far no continuos turning over after starting. Just took off the one connected tot he "I" on the starter solenoid. I did not even have to use my hammer. It took a while and a little extra work for the fuel to get to the carb from sitting so long but I will be in it this weekend.
Thanks for all the help.
