Default Camshaft Advise??

I am contemplating changing the camshaft in my Mustang. It is a 66 but the motor is not original. As far as I can tell from the casting #'s the block is a .302 from a 1985 full size - probably a Crown Vic. I will use an Edelbrock performer intake with a rebuilt Holley 650 cfm - vac. secondary (4160). Can anyone recommend a good mild to mild + camshaft for good idle and sound and better performance. Its just a weekend driver but want some performance too. Any thing I need to consider or look out for with this year model block? Thanks!

Your best bet is to call the cam grinder of your choice, explain what you have and what you are trying to do with the car. They have very knowledgable people on their tech support lines and they can tell you what all you'll need.

If the heads are stock, then a basic stock replacement cam. Convert to a hyd roller cam for more efficiency and less hassle.

I am not sure but being a 1985 block you may be able to easily switch to a roller cam setup..I am pretty sure the crown vic wouldn't have had the roller cam but the block may be cast for it.....Having said that picking a cam depends on a lot of other things like trans type, rear gear ratio, vehicle wieght, other engine mods, compression ratio, rpm range just to name a few...

You should really know your valve to piston clearance before choosing a new cam. Also, longer ratio rockers could also be a solution sometimes.

I've been very pleased with the C9OZ-6250-C hydraulic version of the 289HP cam. Fella near here used an Edelbrock 600, Performer RPM manifold, port-matched his iron heads. Turned 323 hp on the dyno. Smooth idle, good in traffic. I've seen other good results, but this guy actually went to the trouble to put the engine on a dyno.
