Default July 1968 289/302 combo engine question

So I went to have my a/c installed but bracket didn't fit with the problem being that apparently my 289 has 302 block (a good problem to have I think).

The vin is for definitely a 289 (c -code) and was a 2v (now a 4v) and it is a July car which apparently when they totally ran out of 289 blocks.

vin - 8t01C220505

So my question is how do I tell if the top half if a 289 or a 302? Apparently either is possible as they ran out of parts but the the vin is whatever you ordered. The seller who I bought it from was told when he bought it in 1999 that the cylinder heads were the originals but how do I know/where do I look.

I am not sure why the bracket wouldn't fit??..There is no difference between 289/302 blocks that I am aware of?..Same thing with the cylinder heads..The 68 289/302 2V heads should be the same thing....The main difference between the two engines is the stroke..They have different connecting rods, crankshaft and pistons...The rest of the engine is pretty much the same....

You can find the date code on the heads underneath the valve covers..Look up between the pushrods for a number that looks something like 8b17....The first number being the year of the decade and the next being the month(A is Jan,b is Feb etc) and the next number is the day of the month...
Here is a pic of my July 68 302....

As stated, no difference between 289 and 302 likely to cause issues here....

Maybe someone swapped in a 351 at some point, or the wrong bracket was ordered or shipped?

Even in the summer of 1967, Ford was known to use 302 blocks to build 289s. Not that it matters, because the AC was attached to the head. That doesn't matter, either, since both the 289 and 302 heads were drilled the same. And that does not look like a 351 to me. The head engineering number is on the underside, above the lifters, so at a minimum you'd have to remove the intake. There should be a "2A" on the corner of the heads, and of course you could, however, pull the valve cover and look for the "289" and the date code.

thanks for the advice. For whatever reason the bracket didnt fit (said the shop) and I am confident it isnt a 351. The shop said they would send some stamping soon anyway. It sounded like (from Old Air) they sent the mounting for the passenger side instead of driver but who know. Hate the delay but I like the idea of having a 302 anyway. I want to do aftermarket heads and turn it into a 331 next year.
