Default Reverse lights

Hey guys, I just came over from the dark side and just got my hands on a '65 Mustang coupe. I haven't checked it all out yet but from what I've seen so far I believe it going to be a parts car, it's pretty rough. Anyways, I don't know a whole lot about Mustangs yet but this particular car I have has a pair of back up lights I've never seen before. These lights are next to tail lights. All of the other cars I've seen, the lights are under the bumper, if it has them. Are these aftermarket or just rare? Any information would be great.

i think it's someones's attempt at making the car roadworthy when they didnt have the right parts. i personally believe they are rigged up next to the tailights just to do it or someone didnt know better.

Before 1966, backup lights were not required, they were optional, and a lotta Mustangs didn't have them. Some fellow probably got these from JC Whitney and screwed them on. They certainly are not any Ford part I've ever heard of. When Ford dealers were asked to add backup lights, they added the real thing:

I just went out an pulled one off. It's so rusty, I can't see any Manufacture name or number on it. They are crudely mounted, but they do have a gasket type material to keep moisture leaking into the trunk and they have electrical plugs (like and OEM) on the wires. They plug directly into the wiring harness. I think you right about the JC Whittney thing. Thanks guys I really appreciate the info.

They were a dealer accessory, too. Look in some of the restoration catalogs for Falcons and mustangs and you'll see they can still be had.

I look in Year One, they didn't have anything that remotely looked like these.
