Default Drum Brake Adjustment?

I have a 1967 Mustang Coupe and have always had problems with my drum brakes. I have seriously considered converting to disc but I don't have the money at the moment. Anyone have any tips on adjusting the drum brakes so they don't pull to one side and rub significantly even when the pedal isn't pressed? I removed the auto adjust because it was making matters worse but any tips are welcome. P.S. I'm new to the forums so hello to everyone.

What ever you do hook the adjusters back up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are vital for long term brake health.

Buy new adjusters and spring kit for each wheel. Clean up the spots on the backing plate that the shoes rub on so that they are clean, rust free and smooth. Some people will put a spot of dialetic greese on these spots. Install new springs and adjusters and hook up what ever else you disconnected(im guessing the adjuster cable). With the wheel still in the air turn the adjusters out till you start to hear the shoe rub the drum and stop adjusting. Do this for all 4 wheels. Now take it for a test drive.

If it is still pulling and dragging then you need to start looking at the metal lines and hoses for the source of your problem.

One of the main things that will make drums pull is a drum that is out of round or not true. I would do a complete brake job on the front and have the drums turned to ensure they are true. Reinstall the self adjusters and new hardware. Also check the adjusters to make sure they are on the correct side. If you pull the small cap off the end they will be marked with an L or an R.

Sounds great. I really appreciate the help. Maybe it would be better to replace the drums too?

Drums only need replacing if they are cut to more than .060" oversize. Drum brakes will stop straight and true if maintained and adjusted properly. Put the self-adjusters back. Make sure the star adjusters turn smooth and easy, or you'll have some that work and some that don't.
