Default Miswired New alternator on 66 Mustang

I miswired a replacement alternator by hooking the white field wire to the stator on my 66 Mustang. Did this kill the replacement ? Now when I hooked up same correctly the ammeter shows discharge. Also did I possibly damage the VR while incorrectly wired ?

Tks,

Dallas

That's a possibility, I would pull it off, take it to the parts store you bought it at and have it tested. They should have an alt. load tester and it should be free to test. They may also be able to test VR's. I'm thinking you fried something if the gauge shows DC and you have a fully charged battery?
You can have them charge/load test the battery too but they need to fully charge it first which may take a day. I would have each part tested to make sure you're replacing the right part.

Or you can remove the V Reg plug and hook a jumper between the field wire (F) and B+ (A). Put a voltmeter across the battery and you should see 14.5 Vdc or more and hear a heavy whine from the alternator with the engine at idle. if this doesn't work, you have a bad alternator. if you get voltage , the V reg may be bad and you need to do a couple more voltage checks to confirm.

How do you have a ammeter on a 65? (it should be a light on the dash)
