Default power steering pump problem

well i had to replace my second power steering pump on my 70 because of a leak. no problem its warrantied. but the problem now is that after 20 miles it gets sluggish. now the first pump i bought from checker did this and it was the pump. second pump worked for couple years and worked fine, just leaked. this one is new rebuilt. like i said it works for about 20 miles then messes up. the pump ?.

another thought would be to get rid of the power steering all together. ive found one of these adapters. how much harder is my car going to be to steer with manual steering.

Hopefully you didn't put Power Steering Fluid in these pumps????

If so, no wander the failure.

The Thompson/TRW Pump use the thicker Viscosity Type F AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION Fluid.

Read the Dip Stick, FORD put it right on there .

why would i put power steering fluid in it when the book calls for type F transmission fluid. ive always put tranny fluid in my ford power steering pumps, but then ive had a lot of old fords, 30 + years. this is my third old mustang. i did have a old ramble that actually took power steering fluid. anyway it seems fine now.

It's sound advise that would explain the problem. Not an insult ;-)

i think after 20 mins of driving the pump gets hot tolerances get tighter internally and since you have the belt over tightened its causing excessive strain....

but as to the other question, removal of powersteering ...
I personally prefer mustang without it. powersteering is great for parallel parking, but not much else. I find them excessive so steering gets very easy and once you drive 60mph you loose all feel for the road. well that's at least my opinion

Because lots of people do, then they post on the internet wondering why their power steering died. Apparently, they don't read the book, if they even have one.

well i checked the belt this morning and its fine. also when the wife drove it home last night she said it was fine. really only have used tranny fluid in my fords power steering for many many years, was told i could at a early age. wasnt until a few years back that i noticed in the manual that i was suppose to use tranny fluid. until then i figured power steering fluid was power steering fluid, never gave it a second thought. now i did use orielys type f tranny fluid, might of been a bad idea. if it does it again ill use vavoline type f.
