do a google search for something like gear drive and harmonics. you'll probably find a lot of discussions on it. of course you'll have to determine if the sources of info are repeating what they read on the internet or if they have personally experienced the issues.

they sell nitrided timing chain sets that are supposedly more durable. they also sell undersized versions if you have any slack. and also adjustable sets that allow you to have really accurate timing (more than just he crude 2 degree increments). the adjustable versions don't work when you use a mechanical fuel pump eccentric.

I was thinking the same thing. Another note, if you really want to know STAY OFF THE INTERNET. You're in CA, give someone like Paul Pfaff a call (714) 894-7573 and see what they say. You can also try Dean Gellner @ Gellner Engineering Racing Engines (216)-398-8500. Dean ha been building HUGE power for a long time.

all i found was a bunch of people giving their "opinion" with no actual proof.Again, the wonders of the internet, missinformation and attitudes to back it up (on the links that i found).

Gear drives are nothing new, the only differnece is a straight cut gear for noise as opposed to a angle cut, but either way, they have been around for a long time and used by engine maufacturers and still used today.

Exactly why I said to talk to people that are building big power on a consistent basis. Dean is someone that will talk with you. I haven't been to the Pfaff shop in about 15 years, they were very friendly back then and eager to help.

Gear drives are not very common in big power applications and it's not due to cost considering a Jesel setup will run over $800 and many of these engines are north of the $50K mark anyway. I never asked but perhaps someone should, why?? If there was an advantage to running gears all these motors would have them.
