It kinda sounds like the + wire for the starter motor broke free of its connector on the starter solenoid and now you are trying to touch it to the + terminal of the battery.
Dont do that. I can only guess the clicking is the starter motor attempting to fire but due to large resistance (touching part of wire to battery) it fails to drive enough amps to crank the engine but enough to make a click...

Sounds like he's hooking up the "s" wire to the "i" terminal.
Hook up a test light to it (with it disconnected from the solenoid) and turn the key, if it lights the test light, it goes to the "s" terminal on the solenoid.
When you get it running, clean up that nest of wires and properly loom them, not just for looks but also for safety.
