Default Tapping on start up

I have a 66 with the 289 and after long storage(heated) there is a loud tapping that sounds like a lifter it can last from 1-4 mins and then is gone car runs fine and if it is started once a month noise does not happen. I installed new lifters about 3 years ago thinking that was the problem but did not help. Is always the same valve. I am thinking possible valve sticking (carbon) or weak spring would appreciate any suggestions, short of pulling heads as last resort.

Gary, I read this post because I have similar issues. Unfortunately I don't have real solution for you, but I did notice your location. I'm in Clinton Twp. Let me know if your attending any local events with the car, I'll introduce myself. As to your knock issue, sounds like you just need to drive it more Tim

Everything I've read or heard has told me that the tapping is nothing to worry about. Apparently it is something a lot of old Ford v8's do, mine did it before and after a total rebuild, same as yours (only when cold). That being said, I'm sure there is some expensive way of stopping the noise...

Fords of this era were infamous for sticking lifters. I used to install a product called "justice brothers engine tuneup" on every car I tuned back in the 70-80's (700-800 cars or so) that was a petroleum based additive that did a fantastic job in keeping or fixing the lifter from clicking. Anyway if you can find a can it's worth a try.

I had the same problem on my 80's VW Golf I used to bomb around in. If you can't live with the rattle then I would suggest doing a complete head rebuild, but if that is not in your budget, I would use a valve cleaning additive available at any automotive store. They do work as can be evidicend by my VW but that is really only a temporary fix to the problem.
