Odd Noise When Running

Odd Noise When Running
About a year and a half ago, while my son and I were about to put a speedometer cable in my Mustang, it suddenly rolled off the ramps and dropped about a foot onto our driveway. Thankfully nobody was hurt, but after that the Mustang wouldn't turn over and made a terrible noise when we tried to crank it. Eventually, we replaced the starter, which I guess had gone bad from the fall or had been damaged. Once it was replaced, the engine cranked and ran, but there's an odd noise now. It almost sounds like two metal bits scraping together, and it concerns me. My son and I have looked around and tried to determine the source of the noise, but have been unsuccesfull. I now ask anyone to give their opinion of the source of the noise. The car runs and drives, and the noise goes away when the engine is revved or is going down the road. The transmission works perfectly seeing as it was rebuilt not very long ago. It kinda sucks that Bullitt's Mustang can jump the hills of San Francisco and be perfectly fine, but mine falls a foot and gets put out of commission. It's a basic C-4, but the car originally had a 3 speed manual. The engine is a 289 V-8. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My guess is that something is bent from the fall. Did you crawl under the car while it's running? Maybe a dent in the oil pan from hitting the ground or ramp which is interfering with the crank, bent access plate on the bellhousing rubbing on the flywheel. Since the noise changes when you rev the engine, it has to be associated with the engine rotating.

It was the front that dropped. We removed the fan shroud to check if the fan had somehow been rubbing against it, but that did nothing, and there are no visible dents in the oil pan. Do you think that the problem may be stemming from the flywheel? The noise sounds like a chirping, and at idle its about two chirps every second.

That would be my next guess, something in the area of the bell housing/flywheel. You did mention you replaced the starter, how does the spacer plate look? Maybe check the crank pully as well. There are only so many things it could be, keep working the process of elimination.

I would crank it up and slid under the front and see/listen to see if it something on the front on the front of the engine. I am not sure what could have happened but if something is amiss with the balancer, you should see it if is out of true.

Does anyone know just how much clearance the fan pulley and the crank pulley should have between them? It seems like they have a fingernail's width of clearance between each other, and the crank pulley seems to be missing a little metal around the edges.

I don't know for sure, mine looks pretty tight. Why don't you try taking the fan and pulley off and start the engine momentarily and see if the noise stops. I was also thinking, I would check the water pump while you have the fan off and see that it moves freely. Who knows, noisy bearing or the impeller causing the noise.
