Default 71 accelerator pedal/cable issues

My daughter has a 71 Mustang. It is at the mechanic there because she was having a problem with the accelerator pedal. Turns out the car may have originally been manual and somewhere along the way it was changed to automatic. Anyway, the cable/linkage/pedal had been modified to work and was now malfunctioning. The pedal had been modified to fit the cable. The mechanic ordered a new cable and finally found a pedal, but when the pedal came in, it is the same set up as the old one. They have tried to get a pedal to match, but maybe such a thing doesn't exist. He thinks he may have to modify it again - which caused the problem in the first place. Because I am dumb with this stuff, I have no answer for him and no real idea what he is even saying. I may have even totally told all this to you in a way that makes no sense!

I guess what I am asking is this something you have ever run across? Do you know a solution?

Manual and automatic cars had the same pedal and cable. Either your car has had the pedal changed to a different year type, or your mechanic is ordering the wrong cable.

This from the Glazier/Nolan catallog-

G08548 71-72 V8 (before 7/10/72) Accelerator Cable, with clevis end
with hole
G08889 72-73 V8 (after 7/10/72) Accelerator Cable, with ball end

The engine was revving and the car was trying to drive off by itself. It was idling high and when she would put it in gear it would jump. The mechanic said the cable was too long and was getting hung up. A result from a previous modification.

I had something like this happen to me, but it turned out to be an issue with the choke/throttle linkage. Wasn't letting the throttle return to the idle position. Rebuilt linkage and was fine.
