Today I got a brand new stock 5.0 clutch and a used flywheel for $40! Flywheel needs resurfacing/rebalancing but the guy threw it in for free! He was a fellow gearhead to say the least (on prof drift team)

Hey I am collecting part numbers on the hardware I will need. For the bellhousing to engine bolts, would something like the originals work? http://www.cjponyparts.com/302-351w-...-1973/p/F1368/
Or do I need them from 5.0 car?

So I got off the phone with the machine shop about the flywheel. As posted earlier, I have a 5.0L flywheel so I need to have it machined to 28oz imbalance. First place I called said they can't do it, second place said that it would cost more than buying a new one.
He was telling me that unless they have the old one, they would have to mock the flywheel up on a crankshaft to balance it. I asked him if a flexplate would work since I am converting from an auto to stick. Then he asked whether my motor has been balanced (which I believe it has), and told me to find out how they balanced it before or something?
I guess I misunderstood what I have read about 5.0L flywheel rebalancing before because it made it sound easy/cheap. The good news is I got the flywheel for free, but do I really have to buy a new flywheel?

Get a new flywheel that will mount the 10 1/2 clutch that is 28 oz imbalance. You can get a billet steel model for less than $120
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SBF-FORD-HD-...f0a1a9&vxp=mtr
It will fit a 289/302/351W

Find a better shop.

I paid $75 to get material removed from the weighted area of my FOX flywheel to get it at the correct balance. Yes, they had to set up a crank with Hob weights on it.

This is a decent way to go. I could not find that deal when I was doing my swap.

Dang, well at least I didn't pay for it (almost did). Thanks for the link, I was checking those out earlier. For the record people should be aware that since kmjperformance (ebay) sells them cheap enough that having an original one machined isn't worth it!
Lastly, the machinist was saying how the engine's balance is determined by the rotating assembly and the flywheel. Since I now will be buying a new one, wouldn't the balance be a little off? I imagine that every motor has a little different balance...

Or is that what the harmonic balancer is for?
