I saw a couple of different things which looked somewhat similar to oxalic acid but mostly they didn't say what chemicals they contained so I was hesitant to use them. Bar Keeper's Friend did show on the search as well but I had similar hesitations.

so you asked for it in the paint department at a big hardware store and they said they did not have it . . it is powdered wood bleach.

even walmart has it.

Oxalic acid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
.
I know, my internet search found this also at Walmart.

Unfortunately, trying to find it in the store is a whole different story. I spent about 30-min going up and down every aisle in the automotive/home improvement/paint section. Same thing with lowes and HD. I also found it on the Sherman-Williams website but when I went there the guy had no idea what I was talking about. When I would ask someone all I ever got was "what are you trying to do?"

EDIT: I just ordered it from Amazon. Hopefully it will be here by next weekend.

ahhh, ok thats typical . . you could have gotten liquid wood bleach which all hardware stores should have then diluted it a bit.

Since I was having trouble finding the oxalic, yesterday I bought another bottle of Blue Devil flush and started another flush with that (before I ordered the oxalic on Amazon this morning). I just ran the car for a bit, idling in the garage for about 20min, then did a 30min drive down the freeway at 60-70mph most of the way. Overall the temp gauge looked good but when I got home I had to park in the driveway and go around front to get inside and open the garage.

When I tried to start the car again I had some trouble starting. It was turning over but not catching. I had to give it quite a bit of gas to get it to catch. Normally, when the engine is warm, it starts right up so this was a little disconcerting. When it did start, the temp gauge was way higher than when I stopped just 3 minutes before. The gauge went down fairly quickly though (took maybe 30 seconds to get back to where it was before I turned it off). Is this just a gauge thing?

yes the gauge will go higher right after it is turned off . . the fact it quickly went down is encouraging also.

no idea what blue devil is.

did the engine turn over more slowly when it was hot?

It's just some flush I bought at Oreily's.

It seemed to be turning over normally, just not catching.

I bought a timing light but haven't had a chance to actually use it yet.
