Default Cylinder head identification

I have a 65 coupe with 289 heads with some valve stem wear. Given it very slow to get parts over here (Netherlands) my plan was to pick up some 2nd heads rebuild them and swap the heads out to keep the car on the road as much as possible.

My question what is the interchangability like for 289 heads? I have found some 68 289 heads and have a partial part number C80E so will they fit and were can I find the full part number for them?

Cheers

Paddy

.
you do not want 68 302 heads. you will loose a lot of compression because the chambers are 63 cc's. the 65 and earlier heads had adjustable rockers. the later ones did not.

you can get the intake valves back cut to improve flow.

68 302 heads.

Those early head did not flow very well either. Maybe consider an upgrade to modern aluminum? Unless you are staying original...

Barnett, I'm fairly sure shouldered rocker studs didn't start until '68. My factory '67 heads definitely had adjustable rockers.

I thought the '65-66 heads had slotted pushrod holes, while '67+ heads had round pushrod holes and guided rocker arms.

I can't really tell from the pic if the studs are shouldered or not. I did some digging, and Tom Monroe (Rebuilding Small Block Fords) also claims that the shouldered rocker studs started mid-1968, which supports what I found when pulling my factory '67 (CA-smog) heads.

ok, yeah i understand . . you are correct . . i have no idea what i was thinking . . after the slotted heads, they went to the round hole heads with the rail rockers which were still adjustable, then to the stepped stud lock down type.

thanks for correcting that . . hey, at least now i know that at least one person reads my posts, lol.
