Default 67 mustang whining noise in c4 transmission

I have a c4 in my 67 mustang. When I let off the gas there is a whining sound. When I’m back on accelerator the noise disappears. Not sure if noise coming from tran or rear end since both were rebuilt. Any suggestions?

That's a rear end whine in coast. Typically comes from gear mesh in coast not being ideal... It likley won't cause issues other than noise but depending on how bad it is it may actually be an issue.

Talk to the mechanic who did the work if applicable. If not you can start watching rear end rebuild videos on youtube for your specific rearend which i do not know.

On the C4 transmission, the one-way clutch engages in 1st gear (D).

When you release the accelerator, the clutch is released and works in freewheel mode. This is only in 1st gear

In 1st gear (1), the low-reverse band is activated, and the one-way clutch does not work.

Driving in manual 1st gear may help to isolate the problem, if the noise disappears

Another cause could be the torque converter stator one-way clutch. When the engine accelerates its speed, the one-way clutch engages increasing torque, and when the accelerator is released, it works in freewheel mode
