Unable to Adjust Neutral Safety Switch
Hi, First time poster here. Has anyone ever had an issue where it is not possible to properly adjust the NSS. Here are the symptoms, first the car won't start unless you move the lever a bit beyond park (doesn't need to go into reverse). Second, the reverse lights turn on when the car is in neutral and not in reverse. I have not checked if the car will crank in drive but can do so.
So I remove the mounting bolts from the NSS with the car in neutral and then turn the switch until I can insert the pin into the alignment holes. Problem is that by doing this the bolt holes are totally beyond the mounting locations. Really stumped by it, not sure if it could just be a poorly built switch or something wrong with the internal transmission linkage.
Thanks for any insight.

I was slapping the shifter past park to get the starter to turn over for a while. Last summer it got to the point that was no longer reliable, so I adjusted the shift linkage so that "park" was firmly in "park". After adjusting the linkage, the NSS lined up as well. It may be worth trying to adjust your linkage first, and then the NSS. If you resolve the issue, make sure to post what the fix was.
Thanks. Will let you know. It may not be linkage related at least externally because the switch sits on the tranny and when the tranny is clocked into neutral without the linkage attached the switch will not align. I can’t imagine what could be wrong inside of the trannny, maybe if someone has a switch laying around and could post a pic of the position of the cam when the pin is inserted into the alignment hole it could tell me whether or not my switch has some issue with how it was built. Thanks again.
Just by chance, "Park" is at the end of travel in the clockwise direction. If you are counting clicks from the counterclockwise end of travel, instead of Neutral, you will be in Drive or "2" depending on which year you are working on.
Yes I was starting from the end of the clockwise direction. One thing I will mention is that it doesn't really "click" into park when going clockwise, it just goes past reverse and hits the end of its travel. That's something that didn't seem right to me. On the other hand the car shifts perfectly when in drive, so no sign that anything is off other than the alignment of the NSS. It's going to be a couple weeks at least before I can dig into it some more, and I'm on the fence on whether I should just pull the pan and inspect the linkage inside of the tranny or not.
As I understand it, a spring pushes the pawl into the park gears when it finds a convenient position. If it is not "clicking" into park, it may just not be aligned in the rotation of the park gear. As for your NSS problem... I don't believe there is any adjustment that can be made internally. It is quite puzzle. I was reading an old post about column shift transmissions having a different stroke length than the floor shift transmissions, but I think the guy was full of it. I would be leaning towards the NSS itself as suspect. Do you have another one to compare it too?
