Fog light installation
Glen you hit it right on the head. I would like these to be able to come on separate from the headlights. However at the same time I would like it to turn the tail lights on when i have the fog lights on. With these instructions It is saying to splice into 2 different wires from the headlamp switch. It also says that by following these instructions the tail lights will come on with the fog lamps but the way it is being wired I think the fog lamps would only come on if the head lights were on. So I was hoping to find some instuctions that would explain what each wire is controlling before I go cutting factory wiring. I am having second thoughts about cutting the factory wires. I might just run a hot and ground to them to save my wires.
Walt,
I accually dont have factory disc brakes I put the Stainless Steel Disc brake conversion on. So I am not really doing all that great of a job keeping things factory. I also went with the K code chrome.

Instead of cutting wires, try going directly to the headlight switch and attaching the running lights at the same spot the same colored wires from the instructions say to splice. If you get it to work that way, then go ahead and splice the same colored wire as at the connection to the switch that worked. I am still thinking the GT's had a different headlight switch than the non-GT's. Maybe not. Try researching the difference between the GT and non-Gt mustangs in the year 1967-68 to see if the headlight switch is indeed different to accomodate the running (fog) lights. Even though yours is a 65, this mod may be necessary to accomplish your goal without cutting factory wires in the rear. Now, back to my cave.
your right Glen, gts had a little different switch for the headlights. They made it to where the only way you could turn the fog lights on was to have the headlights on, not by themselves. I dont know what makes them different, but i know i cant turn the foglights on without the headlights on (dont know if its riight ot not please correct me if i am or not)
Hi again Riven,
I looked in my Electrical Assy. Manual and it show the fog lamps just pluging into the light harness pig tails. I have those as the fog lamps were pre wired if you have the pony interior. Do you? If so there should not be any splicing in. I also checked in my Virginia Mustang cat. and they have fog lamp wire harnesses. Not sure but I think these would keep you from having to splice wires. All the harnessing was about 50 bucks.

brb-gonna go put another coat of paint on my new GT sway bar

I ordered the wiring harnesses but they require spliceing still according to the instructions.
I have dome some research and the switch seems to be the same on the GTs. The way it appears the hot wire comming out of the head lamp switch feeds the input of the fog lamp switch. Meaning the fog lamps would not come on without the head lights being on. So that being the case, I am not sure why I would need a 2nd wire spliced in. The 2nd wire is said in the instructions to turn the tail lights on but if you have to have the headlamps on to have the fog lamps on then the tail lights are already on because the head lights are on.
That is a good idea to attach to the switch. I can just solder it on up there and not have to worry about cutting anything.

Where does the fog light switch mount on a convertible? I've seen references that would put it right where the switch for the top is. I also researched the GT fog light kit, thinking it could be a back-up to my intermittent headlights until I solved that problem. So I wanted them wired independent of the headlight switch for obvious reasons and the diagram has it plugging in. Anyway, new headlight switch took care of the headlights, as many of you noted it would.
